T he United States made a statement at their home World Cup, beating Paraguay 4-1 in front of 70,492 at Los Angeles Stadium. An early own goal, a Folarin Balogun brace and a stoppage-time strike from Giovanni Reyna gave the co-hosts a commanding start in Group D.
A dream start in Los Angeles
It could hardly have begun better for the hosts. Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla turned the ball into his own net in the 7th minute, and the lead doubled on 31 minutes when Folarin Balogun finished off a move involving Christian Pulisic. Balogun struck again in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-0 at the break.
Paraguay pull one back
Paraguay improved after half-time and got a goal back through Mauricio in the 73rd minute, briefly hinting at a way back into the game. But the United States held firm and restored the three-goal cushion deep in stoppage time, Giovanni Reyna making it 4-1.
A physical night, a statement result
It was a feisty contest: six yellow cards, five of them for Paraguay, with Tyler Adams the only United States player booked. For the co-hosts it is the perfect opening night in front of a passionate Los Angeles crowd; for Paraguay, a chastening start with plenty to address before their next Group D game.
