C anada are through to the Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio scored in the 92nd minute to beat South Africa 1-0 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on June 28. The match had produced little of note for 90 minutes before Eustaquio's late intervention ended South Africa's World Cup.
It was a tense, attritional affair with few clear chances for either side. South Africa defended with discipline and looked capable of forcing extra time, but Canada kept pressing and were rewarded when Eustaquio drove home in stoppage time to settle the tie.
South Africa are eliminated at the first knockout hurdle. Canada advance to the Round of 16 and will now look to build on a victory that owed everything to composure and persistence in the closing stages.
