P araguay have pulled off one of the biggest upsets of World Cup 2026, knocking out Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Gillette Stadium in Boston on June 29. Germany, four-time world champions, are out at the first knockout stage for the second time in their last three World Cups.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead in the 42nd minute. Kai Havertz equalised for Germany in the 54th minute, and the match went to extra time still level. In the penalty shootout, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and Nadiem Amiri scored for Germany. Paraguay were perfect: Mauricio, Gustavo Gomez, Matias Galarza and Jose Canale all converted to win 4-3.

Germany exit the tournament in the Round of 32. Paraguay advance to the Round of 16 to face a side from the other half of the bracket in what will be one of the stories of this World Cup.
