Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead in the 42nd minute. Kai Havertz equalised for Germany in the 54th minute, and the match went to extra time still level. In the penalty shootout, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and Nadiem Amiri scored for Germany. Paraguay were perfect: Mauricio, Gustavo Gomez, Matias Galarza and Jose Canale all converted to win 4-3.
Germany exit the tournament in the Round of 32. Paraguay advance to the Round of 16 to face a side from the other half of the bracket in what will be one of the stories of this World Cup.
