John McGinn Sends Scotland to First World Cup Win Since 1990
John McGinn’s first-half goal earned Scotland a 1-0 win over Haiti in Boston, their first victory at a World Cup since 1990 and enough to top Group C after the opening round.
S cotland claimed their first World Cup win since 1990, beating Haiti 1-0 in their Group C opener in Boston through John McGinn’s first-half strike. The result lifted Steve Clarke’s side to the top of Group C after Brazil and Morocco had drawn earlier in the day.
McGinn the difference
The decisive goal came in the 28th minute: after Haiti goalkeeper Johny Placide parried Ché Adams’ effort, McGinn was on hand to finish, the chance created by Ben Gannon-Doak’s run and cross. Haiti pushed in the second half and went close to an equaliser, but Scotland held on for a landmark three points in front of 64,146.
It is a long-awaited result for the Tartan Army, ending a wait for a World Cup win stretching back 36 years.
