Emam Ashour’s first-half strike had Egypt dreaming of an upset before a Mohamed Hany own goal let Belgium escape with a 1-1 draw in their Group G opener in Seattle.
E gypt pushed Belgium all the way before a second-half own goal earned the Red Devils a 1-1 draw in their Group G opener at Lumen Field in Seattle. Emam Ashour’s early strike had the Pharaohs in front, and they led at the break for the first time in their World Cup history.
Ashour stuns Belgium
Ashour curled a fine finish into the bottom corner in the 19th minute to put Egypt ahead. Egypt’s compact, disciplined shape frustrated a Belgium side featuring Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku, and the Pharaohs carried their 1-0 lead into half-time.
Lukaku sparks the leveller
Belgium changed it up after the hour, and substitute Romelu Lukaku made an immediate impact. His introduction led to the equaliser in the 66th minute, an own goal by Mohamed Hany under pressure.
A point apiece
The draw was a strong result for Egypt against one of the group’s favourites, in front of 66,775 in Seattle. Group G also features Iran and New Zealand, who meet later.
